Founder & History
The founder of Window Film Systems is Joe Norris. He owned and operated a company called Nordel Interiors. It was a retail furniture store that sold high end furnishings and floor coverings.
Around 1970 as Joe was wondering what to do next to expand and develop the company, an executive with Solar-X approached him and showed him their window films. They had silver, bronze and clear films. Not an extensive line by any means but Joe liked the idea of something new and felt it was a promising idea. Joe applied the silver film to a small window unit and took it around to any place he felt might have an interest in his new product. He was a one man show with an answering machine, a novelty in those days, but it all worked perfectly for him.
In 1978 Joe did a re-organization of his company and o/a Window Film Systems changed the legal name of the company to Ten Eighty Five Holdings. Some may ask, "Why this name?" It's simple, 1085 was Joe's address! That name remains and is still Joe's home.
By 1980 Madico had taken over Solar-X and Joe had persuaded them that he should be their direct account and he gradually established customers across the country. Joe had seen steady growth when in 1990 a young up-start by the name of Peter Yates, who owned an auto repair business, approached Joe with the proposition of joining forces with him and purchase the company. Peter had found his mentor, from whom he would learn a great deal. Peter sold his automotive business and jumped on board. With an already existing film installation business, Peter would enhance the distribution business. Having and installation business enabled Joe and Peter to be very aware of what their dealers were going through in Canada. They started a culture for the company that is still present today. We care about each other, our customers, and quality in everything we do.
When there were holes to be filled in the distribution network, Peter would hit the road, sailboard on the roof of his car, and go find new business. Some of the dealers developed then are still with us. As Joe was considering the idea of retiring, Peter, ever the entrepreneur, worked at taking over the business. That transition took place in 1992 when Peter became the new owner of Ten Eighty Five Holdings. Joe remains a part of the Window Film Systems family, a mentor to Peter, and stops by the office on a regular basis.
Peter was now the one man show. He would ship orders to dealers, go on sales calls for installations, and even install the job on occasion, all working out of Joe's basement. The business continued to grow and in 1995 hired Troy Bungay. There have been many employees come and go from Window Film Systems as with any company, but Troy remains to this day. Most of the people you will deal with here have been around for awhile. Daphne for example, started when the grand total of employees was three. Or BJ, who came to us fresh out of high school. Both have recently passed their 10th anniversary with the company and can "do it all". You have to when you're small. They are just part of the very dedicated staff that makes Window Film Systems what it is today.
