We are often asked, "Can I install the film myself?" There is no simple answer. Window film installed by a recognized film dealer is always the preferred route.
Window film dealers are knowledgeable in the various types of films, their properties and the best applications for your particular needs. Authorized film dealers are trained in the proper techniques for installing film correctly to get a clean, smooth finish, free of bubbles, debris, creases and tightly trimmed to the frame of your windows.
Most windows require the expertise of an experienced installer. Dealing with palladium transom windows, flaky painted windows, oozing putty and tar around the frames, etc. can be quite tricky. Quality installers are well versed in these types of windows and can take a truly difficult install and make it look easy.
Major manufactures offer a lifetime warranty on residential films. If the film is not installed by a recognized dealer, there is no such warranty.
Security film should always be installed by a qualified dealer. For the film to work properly, it must be installed properly. The techniques and tools involved require a professional. Inadequate installation could result in poor performance or even failure of the film.
Having said this, there are times when it is advantageous for a home owner to attempt the installation of film themselves. If there is a situation where one or two small windows need an opaque / decorative film, or even a solar film, it can be cost effective to purchase the film and try it yourself. However making a few mistakes can start running your costs up and you may find it would have been less expensive and less frustrating to have the dealer do the install from the beginning.
